Have you ever wondered what lies beneath the surface of this quiet, green space? Welcome to Balmoral Cemetery, a place where the echoes of Brisbane’s past whisper through the trees. Though it may seem like just another patch of green in the city, nestled between Wynnum and Bennett Roads, Balmoral Cemetery holds a rich and fascinating history that breathes life into the stories of generations past.

Opened in 1874, this cemetery was originally known as Bulimba Cemetery, and it was a place where Brisbane’s early pioneers, explorers and leaders found their final resting places. The first burial, in 1874, was a tragic one: 6-year-old George Wilson Pointon, who drowned in Norman Creek. The cemetery holds the graves of many prominent people including a Lieutenant Governor, several Mayors and numerous Members of Parliament.

Imagine the bustling life of the cemetery in its early years. You can almost hear the clopping of horse-drawn hearses as they made their way through the gates, the whispers of condolences, and the hymns drifting through the air from the nearby church. The stone wall that surrounds the cemetery, still standing today, was a testament to the hard work of those who built it during the Great Depression.

Balmoral Cemetery closed in the early 1960s, but it remains a vital part of Brisbane’s heritage, steeped in the memories of those who once walked its grounds. It is a reminder of the lives lived and the stories woven into the fabric of the city. Many graves face east, following the tradition of Christianity, however, some of the oldest graves face other directions – a small trace of a different time and different beliefs.

Today, the cemetery is a peaceful place, where visitors can find solace, reflect on the past and appreciate the beauty of nature. Every headstone tells a story. Take a moment to read the names, dates and inscriptions. Each one is a window into a life lived. Balmoral Cemetery is a place of remembrance, a place where the living can connect with the past. It is a place of peace and beauty, where the stories of Brisbane’s past continue to be told.
