Do you hear that creak? That’s the sound of Ballystruan whispering its secrets, secrets carried on the wind over centuries. Right now, we are standing on a piece of land known as Ballystruan, a name that rolls off the tongue like a forgotten melody. It’s an ancient name, derived from the Irish “Baile Sruín,” echoing a time when Gaelic was the language of this land. Ballystruan isn’t just a name on a map. It’s a townland, a centuries-old division of land that speaks to Ireland’s rich history. In fact, it’s the 50,498th largest townland in all of Ireland and the 711th largest in County Dublin. But tucked away within Ballystruan is a tale that sends shivers down the spine: the story of the Ghost at Ballystruane. Around eighty years ago, a young woman named Kathleen Coughlan lived in Ballystruane House. She fell deeply in love with the local carter, and they were secretly engaged. Sadly, tragedy struck, and Kathleen died before they could marry. They say that Kathleen, unable to rest, now walks the “Green Lane.” Her heartbroken fiancé, driving his cart late at night, began seeing her spectral form appearing before him, a chilling reminder of their shattered love. Terrified, he tried everything to avoid her. He’d lie in the bottom of the cart, letting the horses find their own way home. But at the narrowest point of the lane, the horses would always stop, forcing the terrified carter to face the apparition of his lost love. Ballystruan might seem quiet, but it’s a place where history and folklore intertwine, and where the echoes of the past still linger in the air.
