Hear the echoes of faith. Baldrine Methodist Chapel stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of this village. This chapel has been a beacon of community and worship for generations. Let’s step back in time and uncover its story.

Baldrine itself is a village steeped in history. Its name comes from the Manx words “balley drine” meaning “town of the blackthorn”. That name dates back to at least 1643. Baldrine sits on the A2 road. It is the coast road linking Douglas and Ramsey. The River Gawne gracefully flows through the village. It winds its way through Garwick Glen toward Garwick Beach.

Our story centers on Baldrine Methodist Chapel. It actually started with two chapels. The first Primitive Methodist chapel was built in 1843. Anne Kelly, a Barroose resident spearheaded the project. Her husband Thomas Kelly sold 150 square yards of land for a mere two shillings. Anne Kelly laid the first stone. She prayed for divine blessings on the building. This initial chapel cost around £100 to build.

As the congregation grew a new chapel became necessary. In 1883, the second Baldrine Methodist Chapel was built. This one cost £383. The new chapel could accommodate 118 people. It also included a Sunday school for the local children. Imagine the joyful sounds of children learning and singing.

The church and hall are located on opposite sides of the Main Road in Baldrine. Sunday worship takes place in the hall at 11 am. The hall is accessible to all with a convenient ramp for wheelchair access. It also features kitchen and toilet facilities. Local community groups use the hall extensively. It is a hub of activity and connection.

Throughout the year Baldrine Methodist Chapel hosts various events. There are coffee mornings and a Mariners’ service. A Harvest Supper, Oe’ill Voirrey and a Christmas Fayre bring the community together. The Men’s Fellowship meets weekly from October to March. These gatherings create a sense of belonging and shared purpose.

Baldrine Methodist Chapel extends a warm welcome to all who wish to join its community. Worship services have been held here since 1843. The chapel continues to be a place of solace and spiritual growth.

Interestingly, Baldrine is also home to a Buddhist Theravada temple and monastery. This shows the diverse spiritual landscape of this small village.

Today Baldrine Methodist Chapel stands as a building with distinctive character. It was built in 1884. The chapel has an attractive charm. Once arranged over one floor with a suspended ceiling, it potentially holds a pitch pine vaulted ceiling.

As we stand before Baldrine Methodist Chapel let’s appreciate its enduring legacy. It is a story of faith, community and the steadfast spirit of Baldrine.
