The story of Balboa Sports Center involves a long-awaited upgrade. In 1992 a new recreation building was dedicated. This $2.5 million facility changed everything. The 17000-square-foot building was a welcome addition. It boasts California mission-style architecture. Inside you’ll find a gym meeting rooms a kitchen and much more. Before this addition the park was incredibly popular. It was packed on weekends. However it lacked even basic amenities like restrooms. Imagine the crowds without modern facilities. The new building addressed this long-standing need. It also provided space for numerous sports and exercise classes. Classes ranged from peewee basketball to adult volleyball.
The original plans for a community building faced delays. There was opposition from nearby homeowners. They worried about increased traffic. Eventually a compromise was reached. The building’s location was shifted to minimize traffic disruption. The building’s design was also carefully considered. It complements the open-space environment of the park. Architects Veniegra & Veniegra even received an award for their design.
