What does it mean to balance? Here, before the Balanceakt Sculpture, that question takes on a whole new meaning. The Balanceakt, a striking figure by Stephan Balkenhol, isn’t just a piece of art. It’s a powerful symbol, perched atop remnants of the Berlin Wall. The sculpture was unveiled in 2009, marking two significant anniversaries. It commemorated 50 years since the laying of the foundation stone for the Axel Springer building and 20 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall. The Axel Springer building, once a “lighthouse of the free West,” stood defiantly beside the wall for 28 years. Former German President Richard von Weizsäcker spoke at the unveiling. He highlighted Axel Springer’s unwavering belief in German reunification. Dr. Mathias Döpfner, CEO of Axel Springer AG, explained the sculpture’s meaning. The balancing man represents triumph over division. He also serves as a reminder of the continued need for responsible engagement with freedom. The Balanceakt is a 5.70-meter tall man, seemingly poised for his next step. He is made of painted bronze and concrete. His precarious perch is formed by original sections of the Berlin Wall. The figure itself weighs approximately 740 kg. Commissioned by the “Bild” newspaper, the sculpture invites us to reflect. It speaks to the courage it took to cross the border, seeking freedom. The Balanceakt stands as a constant reminder of the past. It also embodies the ongoing pursuit of balance in a world that is always changing.
