Is there a church in this town that has weathered as many storms as Baker Road Baptist Church? Here we stand in front of a building that holds more than just bricks and mortar. Baker Road Baptist Church has a history filled with triumph over adversity, a testament to the unwavering faith of its congregation. Founded in 1978, Baker Road Baptist Church started as a mission by Memorial Baptist Church with just thirteen families. What began with services at Pumphrey Elementary School, under the leadership of Rev. David B. Davis, rapidly blossomed into a thriving community. Their first bus ministry, with volunteers dressed as clowns, soon brought over sixty new members. Their spirit, their drive to serve, earned Baker Road Baptist Church the title of Texas’ fastest-growing Southern Baptist Church in the early 1980s. But their journey was far from over. This church faced hardship with the same resilience they showed in their early days. Hurricane Ike in 2008 left their building devastated, forcing them to hold services in a damaged fellowship hall. They became, as they jokingly called it, “the church with no walls.” And if that wasn’t enough, their pastor, Marvin L. Rose, suffered personal loss and his son battled cancer. Through it all, Baker Road Baptist Church persevered. They rebuilt, they supported their pastor, and they continued to serve their community. Even amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, when the world seemed to stop, their faith remained unshaken. Baker Road Baptist Church stands today, a beacon of hope, a testament to the power of faith in the face of adversity. Their story reminds us that even when faced with seemingly insurmountable challenges, unwavering belief can pave the path to a brighter future.
