Nestled in a valley of military significance, Baiyu Village awaits. Baiyu Village translates to “Cypress Valley Village”. It earned this name from the cypress trees that once flourished on the surrounding mountains. The village stretches approximately 10km from south to north and 5km from east to west. It sits along the ancient path linking Cuandixia Village to the south and Huangcaoliang to the north. This route formed a crucial section of the historic Beijing West Ancient Path, a route of significant military importance, particularly during the Ming Dynasty. Baiyu Village itself gained the nickname “Military Village”. Each family within its boundaries had at least one member serving in the army. Just north of Baiyu Village stood the Tianjin Pass, a vital pass along the Great Wall. Historical records reveal a fascinating detail: trees were forbidden within a 10km radius of the Great Wall. Soldiers regularly burned the vegetation, including the cypress trees, to maintain this clear zone. While the cypress trees have vanished, the name Baiyu persists. Unlike Cuandixia Village, which largely escaped the ravages of war, Baiyu Village suffered three attacks by the Japanese army. This explains why few ancient houses with complete structures remain. Looking north from Baiyu Village, you’ll see Huangcaoliang, or “Yellow Meadow Ridge”. This mountain, renowned for its beautiful meadow at an altitude of over 1700 meters, attracts hikers and campers from June onwards each year. Baiyu Village stands as a testament to a rich history intertwined with military strategy and the ebb and flow of conflict.
