Has anyone ever heard of a neighborhood built from scratch? Well, the Bairro do Cerco do Porto is just that. It’s a product of the ambitious “Plano de Melhoramentos para a Cidade do Porto 1956-66”, designed as a social housing project. Bairro do Cerco do Porto officially opened its doors in 1963 with 804 apartments spread across 32 blocks. Imagine a brand new community, rising from the dust, offering affordable homes to those in need. The Bairro do Cerco do Porto was a beacon of hope. Fast forward to 1991, and the neighborhood grew again. Two more blocks were added bringing the total to 34, with 888 apartments available. This expansion highlights the continuing need for social housing and the Bairro do Cerco do Porto’s ongoing role in fulfilling that need. Today, it stands as one of Porto’s largest social housing projects, second only to the Bairro das Campinas. While it offers vital housing, the Bairro do Cerco do Porto has faced challenges. Reports suggest issues with drug trafficking and social degradation have unfortunately impacted the community. Despite these challenges, the heart of the Bairro do Cerco do Porto beats on. Stories emerge from within its walls, stories of resilience, community, and even art. Think of António Fernando, a resident who transforms discarded wooden crates into miniature replicas of Porto’s iconic landmarks. His art, born from the simplest materials, reflects the spirit of the neighborhood. The Bairro do Cerco do Porto is more than just buildings. It’s a complex tapestry woven with threads of hope, struggle, and the enduring human spirit.
