The Bahrebachmühlenviadukt. Built between 1868 and 1871 it opened officially on April 8 1872. Originally designed to carry the Leipzig-Chemnitz railway line across the Bahrebach stream near Borna the viaduct now gracefully spans the A4 Autobahn. It’s more than a railway crossing it’s a technical marvel. Imagine the sheer effort involved in constructing such a structure with the technology of the time.
The Bahrebachmühlenviadukt is a masterpiece of masonry. The facing and the side walls are clad in Harthauer chlorite schist. Elegant isn’t it? The arches themselves and some of the girders are made from Elbe sandstone. A beautiful contrast. Each stone carefully placed. Each arch meticulously crafted. This bridge is a work of art and engineering.
But the life of the Bahrebachmühlenviadukt wasn’t without challenges. The six-lane expansion of the A4 Autobahn presented a significant hurdle. The existing underpass wasn’t aligned correctly. The arch span wasn’t wide enough. Ingenious engineers developed a solution. Between 2000 and 2002 they carefully removed parts of three pillars. They replaced them with two wider passages. These now accommodate three lanes and an emergency lane each.
The Bahrebachmühlenviadukt is more than just a bridge. It’s a living breathing structure. Its longest arch spans 18 meters. Its height above the valley floor is 27 meters. Its total length 225 meters. That’s a considerable length. Think of the thousands of trains that have crossed it. The countless travelers who have seen the landscape unfold from its height. In 2009 the crown of the bridge’s track towards Burgstädt was renovated. The work was completed in 2010. A modern concrete substructure replaced the original. This ensured the continued safe passage of trains while maintaining its historic charm. The Bahrebachmühlenviadukt shows that even ancient constructions can meet modern demands.
