Curiosity sparked within me as I approached the Baha’i Faith Detroit Center. This wasn’t just another building. It held a unique story within its walls. The Baha’i Faith Detroit Center opened its doors in 1998. It was dedicated on April 9, 2000. Before becoming a beacon for the Baha’i community, this very building served as a Methodist church from 1980 to 1998. The Baha’i community’s journey in Detroit is marked by several moves. During the 1950s, they had a meeting house on Delaware Street in the New Center Area. This property was later purchased by General Motors in 1980. The community then moved to a former Kingdom Hall on James Couzens Highway, between McNichols Road and Outer Drive. Finally, they found their current home, the Baha’i Faith Detroit Center, on Greenfield Road. Today, the Baha’i Faith Detroit Center thrives with a diverse membership of approximately 100 people. This includes individuals of various ethnic backgrounds. Black, white, and Middle-Eastern/Persian heritages are all represented. While other languages are sometimes spoken, English is the primary language used during services and gatherings. The Baha’i Faith Detroit Center is nestled in a predominantly African American residential neighborhood. It’s surrounded by modest single-family and duplex homes. This location provides a sense of community while also being close to the diverse city of Southfield and other Oakland County communities. The center stands out with its well-maintained lawn and ample parking. Inside, it boasts a large meeting room, a library and bookstore, a kitchen, several offices, and a fellowship room. The Baha’i Faith Detroit Center isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a hub of activity and learning. Weekly Baha’i study classes cater to both adults and children. Worship services are held on Fridays at 8:00 p.m. and Sundays at 10:00 a.m. A youth group community meeting takes place on Sundays. A devotional service is held on Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m., featuring readings from various scriptures including Jewish, Christian, Islamic, and Baha’i texts. The Baha’i Faith Detroit Center actively participates in interfaith activities. This includes area Interfaith Thanksgiving and World Sabbath services. They invite representatives from other religious groups to speak at the center. They also engage in community projects focused on youth, the homeless, and food banks. The Baha’i Faith Detroit Center’s commitment to racial unity and breaking down prejudice is evident in its involvement with Model of Racial Unity, Inc. This non-profit organization works to promote racial understanding in metropolitan Detroit. The center embodies the Baha’i teachings of unity, justice, and spiritual growth. It serves as a vital space for connection, learning, and community engagement in Detroit.
