Can a park whisper forgotten stories? Bagley Park can. This seemingly tranquil space holds within its boundaries a tale of resilience, injustice, and the enduring spirit of community. Bagley Park wasn’t always a park. It began its life as Macedonia Park, a haven for African-American families seeking refuge and building lives after the Civil War. In the heart of this close-knit community lived a man named William Bagley. A former resident of Forsyth County, Bagley and his family had fled racial violence, seeking solace in the burgeoning community of Macedonia Park. He quickly became a beloved figure, a pillar of strength and leadership, earning the nickname “the unofficial mayor”. Over time, the community, in a testament to his impact, began referring to the area as “Bagley Park”. This community thrived, boasting businesses, churches, and a palpable sense of hope. However, the years following World War II brought about a period of stark change. As Atlanta grew, so did the desire for expansion. Despite promises to honor Bagley’s legacy, in a move steeped in injustice, the land was seized, the homes razed, and Bagley Park, the community, was erased. In its place rose a recreational area, initially retaining the name Bagley Park, a hollow echo of the vibrant community it replaced. In 1980, even that small act of remembrance was stripped away, the park renamed Frankie Allen Park, further obscuring the memory of the displaced families. But the story of Bagley Park didn’t end there. Through the tireless efforts of descendants like Elon Butts Osby, William Bagley’s granddaughter, and organizations like the Buckhead Heritage Society, the fight to reclaim the lost history began. Their dedication, fueled by a desire for recognition and justice, led to the reinstatement of the park’s rightful name in 2022: Historic Bagley Park. So, as you stand here, remember. Bagley Park is more than just a park. It’s a testament to the strength and resilience of a community silenced but never forgotten. It’s a reminder that history, even when erased, has a way of resurfacing.
