The earth trembles beneath your feet as you stand before Bagger 1452 – SRS 1200. Rising like a metal leviathan, it’s the last surviving bucket-wheel excavator from the former Sch\u00f6nau-Berzdorf brown coal opencast mine. Bagger 1452 was built in 1961, its purpose to mine lignite, a type of brown coal, from the Lusatian coalfields. This behemoth was once a key player in the region’s industrial landscape. Today, it stands as a testament to both the power of machinery and the environmental impact of mining. Imagine the sheer size of this machine, towering over you at 33.5 meters high and stretching out 75 meters long. Its bucket wheel alone measures 8.6 meters in diameter, capable of scooping up 1.2 cubic meters of coal with each rotation. With 52 scoops per minute, it could excavate an impressive 3744 cubic meters of lignite per hour! The sounds of the excavator must have been deafening, the ground would have vibrated with the movement of the massive machine. This mining giant operated until 2001, when the mine closed. The giant would have been just another piece of scrap metal. But the Verein Bergbaulicher Zeitzeugen Berzdorf – Oberlausitz saved it. The organisation wanted to preserve Bagger 1452 as a reminder of the region’s industrial past. The Bagger stands as a museum today, a tangible reminder of the region’s history. It’s not just a giant piece of machinery, but a symbol of both industrial progress and the need for environmental responsibility. Its presence compels you to reflect on the delicate balance between technological advancement and the planet’s health. Look out across the landscape for a moment – beyond the Bagger’s massive presence, the water glistens under the sun. This is Lake Berzdorf, created from the mine’s former open pit. A testament to the transformation of the land, it’s a symbol of regeneration – a reminder that even in the face of industrial progress, nature finds a way to renew itself. And as you stand there, gazing at the Bagger against the backdrop of the lake, you can’t help but feel a sense of awe and wonder at the power and resilience of both man and nature.
