Where flowers meet trade that is Bag Bazar. This historic Kolkata neighborhood has a story as vibrant as the blooms it’s named for.

Introduction:
Welcome to Bag Bazar. It is more than just a place. It’s a tapestry woven with threads of history culture and commerce.

Main Narrative:
The name Bag Bazar comes from old Bengali. “Bagh” means flower garden. “Bazar” means market. So Bag Bazar literally translates to flower market. Imagine the scent of jasmine and roses mingling with the bustle of traders.

Once upon a time English residents gradually left Sutanuti. It became less popular as a residential area. Only Perin’s Garden remained a pleasure spot. British East India Company servants once brought their ladies here for evening strolls. By 1752 it was sold.

Did you know Bag Bazar played a role in the fight against the British? Bosepara is now part of Bag Bazar. The Boses and Pals migrated here from Hooghly district. The house of Nandalal and Pasupoti Bose became a hub for nationalist politics in the late 19th century. Important meetings took place here during the anti-partition movement of 1904-5. A famous protest procession against the Bengal partition started from Federation Hall and ended at the Bose house.

Bagbazar Ghat on the Hooghly River has its own tale. It was once called Rogo Meeter’s Ghat. This was after Raghu Mitra. He was the son of Gobindram Mitra. Gobindram was a wealthy and influential figure in the early days of the British East India Company. The ghat is still used today. People bathe here collect Ganges water and unload country boats.

Bag Bazar even witnessed a battle. In 1756 a small force under Ensign Piccard fought off an advance guard of Siraj ud-Daulah. However Kalikata eventually fell in the Battle of Lal Dighi.

Sri Ramakrishna’s visits added spiritual significance to Bag Bazar. He first visited a house in north Kolkata in 1877. It was here he met Harinath Chaterjee Gangadhar Ghatak and Girish Chandra Ghosh. Sister Nivedita also lived in Bag Bazar. She opened her school here in 1898. The office of Udbodhan magazine founded by Swami Vivekananda is also in Bag Bazar.

The old Chitpur Road now Rabindra Sarani was Bag Bazar’s lifeline. Tram tracks came to Bag Bazar in 1904.

Bag Bazar is a place of culture too. Alaler Gharer Dulal a book includes women’s conversations centered on Bag Bazar. These conversations likely happened when they bathed in the Hooghly River. Nagendranath Basu lived and worked in Bag Bazar. He created the 22-volume Biswakosh Bengali encyclopedia. Mohanchand Basu introduced kheur in Bengali akhrai songs. Bhola Maira a renowned kaviyal had a sweet shop on Bag Bazar Street.

Sensory Details:
Picture the scene. The scent of flowers fills the air mingling with spices from nearby stalls. Hear the sounds of haggling vendors and the gentle flow of the Hooghly River. Feel the energy of this historic neighborhood pulsing around you.

Conclusion:
Bag Bazar is more than just a market. It’s a living testament to Kolkata’s rich history and culture. From flower gardens to nationalist movements Bag Bazar has played a vital role in shaping the city we know today. Take a moment to soak it all in. This is Bag Bazar a place where history blooms.
