In 1913, atop one of Gahoe-dong’s highest points, the Baek In-je House was born. It offered breathtaking views. This wasn’t just any house. The Baek In-je House was a modern hanok, a testament to the changing times. It blended traditional Korean architecture with modern techniques. It was originally built for Han Sang-ryong, a bank executive. He used black pine from the Yalu River area. He relished the home’s panoramic views of the sprawling village below. The view from the byeoldangchae, the detached quarters, was especially spectacular. Over the years, the Baek In-je House changed hands. It witnessed history unfold from its privileged perch. From 1928 to 1935, it served as a meeting place for Cheondogyo followers. Then, Choi Seok-ik, a wealthy journalist, called it home. Finally, in 1944, renowned surgeon Baek In-je purchased the house. He and his wife, Choi Gyeong-jin, fell in love with the spacious garden. It was this very garden that hosted lively gatherings. Notable figures like activist Ahn Changho and writer Yi Gwangsu graced its grounds. The Baek In-je House was unique. Unlike traditional hanoks, its men’s and women’s quarters were connected by a hallway. This convenient feature allowed residents to move freely without venturing outside. The anchae, the women’s quarters, even boasted a rare second floor. This architectural detail set it apart from other hanoks of the Joseon Dynasty. Inside the anchae, the anbang held a special significance. It symbolized the authority of the female owner, Baek In-je’s wife. After Baek In-je’s passing, his wife remained in the house until 2009. The Seoul Metropolitan Government then purchased the property. In 2015, the Baek In-je House opened its doors to the public as a museum. Today, visitors can explore the sarangchae (men’s quarters), anchae, byeoldangchae, and the tranquil garden. They can step back in time and experience the life of a modern hanok.
