Lost in the tapestry of time, Badile is a place with stories etched into its very soil. Badile, a frazione of Zibido San Giacomo, wasn’t always under its wing. Let’s uncover its intriguing past.

Badile, known as Badècl in Milanese dialect, sits nestled along the Naviglio Pavese. This puts it northeast of Zibido San Giacomo. For centuries, Badile stood as its own independent comune. That was until 1841.

Can you imagine Badile as a self-governing entity? Records show that Badile was a small but vibrant center in the Milanese territory. It shared borders with Moirago to the north and Basiglio to the east. Lacchiarella bordered it to the south. Vigonzino and Zibido San Giacomo were to its west.

Now, here’s an interesting tidbit. As far back as 1396, much of Badile’s agricultural land was granted to the Certosa di Pavia by Gian Galeazzo. He must have recognized its agricultural value.

By 1751, Badile recorded 150 residents. It also served as a parish seat. The population grew to 209 by 1805 during the Napoleonic era. However, fate took a turn in 1809. The Comune of Badile was suppressed and annexed to Moirago. Moirago itself was then absorbed into San Pietro Cusico in 1811. It was a period of significant administrative upheaval.

But hold on. This wasn’t the end of Badile’s story. In 1816, following the establishment of the Kingdom of Lombardy-Veneto, all these centers regained their autonomy. There was a catch, though. They were shifted into the Province of Pavia.

Recognizing the need for administrative efficiency, German rulers stepped in. On January 17, 1841, the municipality was definitively suppressed by the Austrians. It was annexed to Vigonzino. Later, Vigonzino merged into the communal territory of Zibido.

The saga continues. In 1965, Badile was ceded from Zibido San Giacomo to Binasco, a move driven by the wishes of its citizens. Yet, this was not its final destination. Subsequently, Badile returned to being a frazione of Zibido San Giacomo.

Between 1880 and 1936, Badile even hosted a stop on the Milan-Pavia tramway. This connected it to the wider world.

So, as we stand here in Badile, remember that its story is one of independence, annexation, and resilience. It is a place that has evolved through centuries of shifting administrative landscapes. Though small, Badile holds a significant place in the history of this region.
