Curiosity sparked in Baden-Powell’s heart for Portugal. He admired the country and its people. Baden-Powell visited Portugal three times. Twice he graced Lisbon with his presence, and once he visited Madeira. He even considered visiting the Azores, but it never materialized. His first visit to Lisbon occurred on March 4th and 5th, 1929. Upon arrival, Baden-Powell declared his fondness for Portugal, stating his respect for its history. Over 700 scouts representing three associations gathered to greet him. A grand procession, accompanied by a band from Braga, escorted him to the Geographical Society for a formal reception. Baden-Powell addressed the scouts, offering three pieces of advice: adhere to the Scout Law, remember and contribute to Portugal’s greatness, and foster friendship with scouts from other nations. He emphasized the importance of peace and invited Portuguese scouts to the upcoming International Jamboree in England. Later, Baden-Powell met with the Head of State, General Carmona, in Cascais. He received the insignia of the Grand Cross of Christ. Baden-Powell then penned a letter to the scouts of Coimbra, expressing his joy at their unity and inviting them to the Jamboree. In 1930, he visited Funchal, Madeira. There, he met with local scouts, praising and encouraging them. His final visit to Lisbon was in 1934. Sadly, illness prevented him from disembarking. He addressed the assembled scouts and guides from the ship. He expressed his regret at not being able to visit, thanking them for their presence. Despite his illness, he donned his uniform, a gesture specifically for the Portuguese scouts.
