Why did the Duke choose this tranquil spot, nestled between ancient beech forests and the Baltic Sea’s embrace? Our story unfolds here in Bad Doberan-Land, an Amt steeped in history and shaped by ducal whims. Bad Doberan-Land isn’t just a collection of charming villages. It’s a tapestry woven with threads of monastic life, seaside revelry, and the echoes of powerful figures. The story begins in the 12th century with Cistercian monks seeking solace. They established Doberan Abbey, a cornerstone of the region’s development. The abbey’s Romanesque church, later replaced by a magnificent Gothic structure, stands as a testament to their enduring presence. Bad Doberan-Land thrived under the abbey’s influence. Then, in the 18th century, Duke Frederick Francis I of Mecklenburg-Schwerin arrived, transforming the area into a playground for the aristocracy. He declared Heiligendamm, now part of Bad Doberan, Germany’s first seaside resort. Imagine elegant ladies and gentlemen promenading along the shore. They sought the healing powers of the Baltic waters. Back then, sea bathing was a novel concept, touted for its health benefits by physicians. The Duke’s patronage led to the construction of grand buildings in the classicist style, designed by architect Carl Theodor Severin. The Logierhaus, Salongebäude with its empire-style ballroom, and charming Chinese-style pavilions all arose during this period, creating the elegant atmosphere that still lingers. Sadly, Severin’s brilliance wasn’t rewarded with riches. He died in poverty in Bad Doberan, his final resting place unknown. Bad Doberan-Land continued to evolve. It officially became a town in 1879, its coat of arms proudly displaying a deer, crook, and swan. The Molli, a narrow-gauge steam railway, arrived in the late 19th century. Today, it still chugs between Bad Doberan and Kühlungsborn, a delightful reminder of the past. Bad Doberan-Land also has a curious connection to a darker period in history. Adolf Hitler was granted honorary citizenship here in 1932, one of the first towns in Germany to do so. This controversial honor was later revoked in 2007, just before the G8 Summit held in Heiligendamm. Today, Bad Doberan-Land is a peaceful Amt, encompassing villages like Admannshagen-Bargeshagen, Nienhagen, and Wittenbeck. The abbey’s legacy lives on in the magnificent Doberan Minster. The echoes of ducal laughter can still be heard in Heiligendamm’s grand architecture. Bad Doberan-Land invites you to explore its rich past and enjoy its serene present.
