Whispers of the past linger at Back River Memorial Gardens Cemetery. This sprawling cemetery in Montreal’s northeast end holds a century’s worth of stories. It’s more than just rows of headstones. It’s a living testament to Montreal’s Jewish community.

Established around 1883 Back River Memorial Gardens Cemetery wasn’t initially welcomed. Temple Emanu-El congregation initially purchased the land. Members complained it was too wet and far from their downtown synagogue. They later secured better land on Mount Royal. The Back River Cemetery was then donated and sold to other congregations.

Back River became the main burial ground for Montreal’s Jewish community. It held approximately 5000 graves. A century ago this area housed the graves of many hardworking Jewish immigrants. Their headstones bear witness to lives lived in a new land. They tell tales of hope dreams and struggles. Many reveal deaths at young ages highlighting the hardships of the time.

The cemetery isn’t a single plot. It’s divided into two sections separated by a busy intersection. The older north section shows disorganized graves. Some are in pathways. Others are at odd angles. Pathways are overgrown. Many weathered headstones have toppled. Repair is costly and descendants often lack resources. The lack of proper facilities for visitors adds to the neglect.

Despite the challenges Back River holds a poignant beauty. A walk among the graves evokes the struggles and resilience of Montreal’s Jewish history. Periodic fundraising efforts help with repairs. The Memorial Gardens Foundation coordinates maintenance. Family members however are responsible for individual gravesites. Since the 1960s there have been only around 50 burials annually in the southern section.

Today Back River Memorial Gardens Cemetery stands as a powerful symbol. It’s a quiet place of remembrance. It tells of the lives lived and legacies left. It’s a place to reflect on the past and honor the community it represents. So as you stand here let the whispers of these souls enrich your visit to Back River.
