Shrouded in mist, the peaks of Bach Ma National Park have witnessed a fascinating interplay of nature and human history. Bach Ma National Park, meaning “White Horse,” owes its name to the legend of three fairies and their steeds. They descended from the heavens, their white horses enchanted by the lush landscape. Lost in the verdant expanse, the horses transformed into clouds, forever guarding the mountain. This mystical tale encapsulates the ethereal beauty of Bach Ma National Park. Established in 1986, Bach Ma National Park protects 220 square kilometers of diverse ecosystems in central Vietnam, near the city of Huế. However, its history stretches back further. In 1932, a French engineer, Girard, recognized the potential of this cool mountaintop as a retreat. He transformed Bach Ma into a hill station. Over the following years, 139 villas and hotels sprung up, earning it the title of the “Dalat of central Vietnam.” A post office, market, and even a hospital catered to the French elite who sought respite from the lowland heat. The Viet Minh, however, challenged this idyllic escape, and fierce battles marked the early 1950s. After independence, Bach Ma faded into obscurity. The villas crumbled, becoming ghostly reminders of a bygone era. Today, the park offers a range of experiences for visitors. The adventurous can trek to Bach Ma’s summit at 1450 meters, relishing panoramic views. The Five Lakes, or Ngu Ho, invite a refreshing dip, while the Do Quyen Waterfall, framed by blooming rhododendrons, creates a picture-perfect scene. Birdwatchers will delight in the park’s rich avian life, including rare species like the Vietnamese crested argus and Edwards’s pheasant, once thought extinct. The park’s steep granite slopes, covered in evergreen forests, also shelter other elusive creatures. Historically, these forests provided a habitat for Asian elephants, white-cheeked gibbons, and the red-shanked douc langur. A poignant reminder of the past rests in the ruins of the French villas, scattered throughout the park. They whisper stories of elegance, escape, and ultimately, abandonment. Bach Ma National Park offers a poignant reminder of the Vietnam War, as its forests once bore the scars of Agent Orange. Their resilience and recovery stand as a testament to nature’s enduring power. A visit to Bach Ma National Park is not just a journey into nature’s embrace; it’s a walk through time. As you explore its trails and waterfalls, remember the whispers of history carried on the mountain breeze, and the legend of the white horses that forever roam the clouds.
