Ever wondered about a place where the divine rests under a banyan tree? Welcome to the Baba Bateswar Shiv Mandir. It is a place where legend says Lord Shiva himself took respite.
The name “Bateshwar” comes from this very tale. “Bat” is Sanskrit for banyan. “Ishwar” means lord. Bateshwar therefore means “The banyan lord”. The Baba Bateswar Shiv Mandir is more than just a temple. It is a complex of 101 ancient Shiva temples.
These temples stand in a row along the Yamuna River. Raja Badan Singh Bhadauria built them. He also constructed a dam to divert the river’s flow. This ensured the Yamuna would always bless this sacred place.
The temple finds mention in holy texts. These include the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Matsya Purana. The Baba Bateswar Shiv Mandir has deep roots in Hindu tradition. Devotees still make pilgrimages to the Yamuna River. They honor Lord Shiva at this sacred site.
Legend says Raja Badan Singh of Bhadawar built the Bateshwar Nath temple in 1646. The Maharajas of Bhadawar and Mainpuri were always at war. To reconcile, they arranged a marriage between their children. But only girls were born to both. Bhadawar announced the birth of a son. A wedding was arranged with the daughter of the Raja of Mainpuri. Bhadawar sent his daughter dressed as a young man. The girl jumped into the river. Lord Shiva appeared. He transformed her into a boy. Out of gratitude, Bhadawar built the temple. He diverted the Yamuna’s course.
Bateshwar is also the ancestral village of Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Bateshwar molded Vajpayee’s character. His father gave him the name “Atal”. It means firm and unwavering. In 1942, Vajpayee was arrested at Bateshwar for 23 days. This happened during the Quit India movement.
