Founded in July 2005 the School of Life Sciences at Guangzhou University boasts a rich history. It emerged from the merger of two esteemed departments. These were the Department of Biology at Guangzhou Normal University and the Department of Biology at Guangzhou Institute of Education. This happened in 2000. They initially formed the School of Biological and Chemical Engineering. Later they became two separate schools. Today the School of Life Sciences stands as a testament to academic excellence and growth.

The School offers a variety of undergraduate programs. These include Biological Sciences Biotechnology and Biological Engineering. Graduate studies are also available. This includes Master’s degrees in Biology Education and Engineering in Biochemistry. Over 800 students attend the school. This includes over 100 postgraduate students.

The faculty is impressive. There are 86 faculty and staff members. Fifty-nine hold Ph.D degrees. Among the full-time faculty are 22 professors and 25 associate professors. Eight are postdoctoral co-supervisors. Eight are Ph.D. supervisors. Thirty-six are master’s supervisors. Twenty-eight have studied or worked abroad. The school’s faculty is truly diverse and experienced.

The school has a strong commitment to research and development. It boasts a Key Discipline of Bioengineering in Guangzhou City. It also houses two key laboratories. These are the Municipal Key Laboratory of Functional Study on Plant Stress-Resistant Genes and the Laboratory of Gene Function and Microarray. They also have a Laboratory of Research on South China Biodiversity. These are crucial for groundbreaking research.

The School of Life Sciences has cutting-edge research facilities. The Biological Science and Technology Experimental Teaching Center is a Provincial Experimental Teaching Center. The laboratory space covers over 10000 square meters. The equipment is worth 130 million yuan. The school has a biological garden and a pilot workshop. These resources are invaluable for students and researchers. The school has 17 practice bases in Guangzhou. These offer invaluable hands-on experiences.

In the past five years the school has undertaken over 100 research projects. The total funding has reached 40 million RMB. Around 30 were national projects. Over 20 were provincial projects. The school has published over 300 articles. Around 100 are indexed by SCI. Eight monographs and textbooks have also been published. The School of Life Sciences has received numerous awards. It has received six provincial Science and Technology Progress Awards. It has also received six teaching achievement prizes and over 10 authorized invention patents.
