“Room 318,” a voice echoes, “that’s where the magic happens.” Right here at South China Agricultural University, within the walls of B12国家重点实验室, also known as the State Key Laboratory for Conservation and Utilization of Subtropical Agro-bioresources (SKLCUSA), groundbreaking research unfolds. Established in 2011, B12国家重点实验室 represents a milestone. It’s the first state key laboratory in Guangdong province established at a provincial university. The laboratory is backed by three national key disciplines: crop genetics and breeding, pomology, and agricultural insect and harmful biological control. Inside B12国家重点实验室, a dedicated team of 46 permanent staff members, including 28 full professors, push the boundaries of agricultural science. Among them is a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, two distinguished professors from the Chang Jiang Scholars Program, and recipients of the National Outstanding Youth Fund Project. B12国家重点实验室 tackles critical challenges. They focus on crop germplasm creation, resource conservation, and the intricacies of genetic improvements for efficient nutrient absorption. Their work on rice molecular design breeding and research on rice blast disease system is leading the way in China. They also delve into insecticidal plant resource research and explore their functional component use.
