Envision Ayesha Castle perched atop Killiney Hill. Its Gothic Revival style whispers tales of a rich past. This wasn’t always Ayesha Castle though.

Initially christened Victoria Castle in 1840 it was a testament to Queen Victoria’s reign. Robert Warren a prominent Dublin merchant commissioned its construction. Architect George Fowler Jones masterfully blended Gothic and Victorian styles. The castle boasted ornate turrets and crenellations a limestone façade that hinted at medieval grandeur. Intricate Victorian details adorned the grand interiors.

A dramatic change occurred in 1880. Sir Thomas Talbot Power acquired the castle renaming it Ayesha Castle. This name was inspired by H Rider Haggard’s novel She featuring the immortal queen Ayesha. The name change reflected evolving ownership and cultural trends.

Ownership shifted again in 1900. William Martin Murphy an industrialist and politician bought it renaming it Manderley Castle. This name stuck for decades. Murphy’s involvement in the 1913 Dublin Lockout a pivotal moment in Irish labor history adds a layer to the castle’s story.

World War I saw Manderley Castle transformed. It became a military hospital. The Irish Red Cross under Lady Barton’s guidance turned it into a fully functional medical facility. From 1916 to 1918 it treated hundreds of Allied soldiers. The castle sheltered wounded British Australian and Canadian troops.

After the war Manderley Castle reverted to a private residence. The Barton family owned it for almost fifty years. They modernized it adding electricity and central heating while preserving its historical character.

Then in 1997 a new chapter began. Enya the renowned singer purchased Ayesha Castle. The secluded location overlooking the Irish Sea offered her sanctuary. She undertook renovations restoring its original beauty. She added a recording studio and improved security.

Ayesha Castle now stands as a symbol of Killiney’s heritage. Its history is a captivating blend of architectural splendor and intriguing ownership changes. Its imposing silhouette continues to enchant visitors and locals alike. Though private its presence remains a landmark. You can admire it from Killiney Hill Park enjoying panoramic views of the sea. Ayesha Castle a name that echoes through the centuries.
