Can a private company truly build a space station? Here at Axiom Space in Houston, that seemingly impossible dream is becoming a reality. Axiom Space, founded in 2016 by Michael T. Suffredini and Kam Ghaffarian, isn’t just another aerospace company. It’s building the successor to the International Space Station, a privately owned and operated commercial space station. Axiom Space, right here in Houston, aims to launch its first module in 2027. The ultimate goal is to have a fully functional station in the late 2020s or early 2030s. This isn’t science fiction. It’s the future unfolding before us.

Axiom Space’s plan is audacious. They’re building modules here on Earth, then launching them individually into orbit. These modules will initially connect to the ISS. Once enough are assembled and linked, they’ll detach. They will then form the independent Axiom Station. Imagine, a private company with a foothold in the vast expanse of space. Axiom Space’s team includes former NASA personnel. This includes Charles Bolden, a former NASA administrator, and astronauts like Peggy Whitson and Michael Lopez-Alegria. Their expertise is crucial to Axiom Space’s ambitious endeavor.

But Axiom Space isn’t waiting for the completion of their station to make its mark. They’ve already sent private astronauts to the ISS. Axiom Mission 1, launched in 2022, was the first fully private mission to the ISS. It utilized SpaceX’s Crew Dragon. Axiom Space has continued to send private crews to the ISS with missions AX-2 and AX-3. They are planning AX-4 for the near future. These missions are paving the way for a future where space travel is accessible to more than just government-sponsored astronauts. Axiom Space is even developing next-generation spacesuits for NASA. These suits will be used for spacewalks on the ISS and future Artemis missions to the Moon. They might even make it to Mars someday.

Axiom Space, based in Houston, is revolutionizing space exploration. They are turning what was once a government-exclusive domain into a commercial enterprise. As you stand here, consider the sheer scale of their vision. Axiom Space is building not just a space station, but a new era of space travel. They’re bringing the cosmos a little closer to home, right here from Houston.
