“A giant, wouldn’t you say?”
The Avramidis Stele here in Bamberg is hard to miss. Towering over us, this “Large Sculpture 1982” as it is officially titled, is a testament to the enduring power of abstract art.
The Avramidis Stele is just one piece in a series of modern sculptures Bamberg acquired. Starting in 1998, the city hosted exhibitions featuring world-renowned artists like Fernando Botero and Igor Mitoraj. Bamberg wisely chose to purchase one sculpture from each exhibition. This foresight created the foundation for the trail of modern sculptures we see today, with Avramidis’s work as a prominent highlight.
