The Avion CBA-123 stands before you, a beacon of collaboration and technological ambition. It was a joint project between Brazil and Argentina, two South American giants who dreamt of soaring together into the future. This sleek turboprop was conceived in the 1980s, a time when the regional air travel market was burgeoning. Known as the “Vector,” this aircraft was a groundbreaking design, boasting a unique concept for a turboprop: rearward-facing, counter-rotating propellers. This innovative design was promised to cut cabin noise and vibration levels, making for a more comfortable flight. But the Vector wasn’t just about passenger comfort; it was also designed to be efficient, with an impressive range of 1,872 km and a cruising speed of 612 km/h. Unfortunately, the Vector’s story is one of unfulfilled potential. After two prototypes were built and tested, the project was cancelled in 1991. Rising costs, lack of government support, and intense competition from other regional aircraft makers all took their toll on the Vector. Yet the Vector’s legacy lives on, reminding us that sometimes the greatest dreams don’t always take flight. The surviving prototypes stand proudly on display in Brazil and Argentina, testaments to the bold ambition that was the Avion CBA-123 Vector.
