What if a street could tell the story of its own birth? Here on Avenue Louis Gribaumont, the very pavement echoes with the whispers of its origins. Avenue Louis Gribaumont stretches from Avenue de Tervueren to Avenue de Broqueville, a bridge between Woluwe-Saint-Pierre and Woluwe-Saint-Lambert. This avenue, a mere few hundred meters long, holds a story of generosity and vision. Avenue Louis Gribaumont owes its existence to a man named Louis Gribaumont, a land owner born around 1860. In 1900, shortly after Avenue de Tervueren was laid out, the first section of Avenue Louis Gribaumont, from Avenue de Tervueren to Rue François Gay, was approved. Gribaumont, who resided on Avenue de Tervueren, ceded the land for this new roadway. The municipality of Woluwe-Saint-Pierre, grateful for his contribution, named the avenue in his honor in 1902. He even built the first houses along this section, starting in 1902, solidifying his mark on the area. Avenue Louis Gribaumont continued to evolve. In 1925, the avenue was extended to Rue de la Cambre. Many of the houses you see along this stretch date back to the interwar period, some with a distinct Art Deco flair. Crossing Rue de la Cambre, Avenue Louis Gribaumont enters Woluwe-Saint-Lambert. Here, development occurred primarily in the latter half of the 20th century, mostly residential buildings. The avenue continues, crossing Rue Slegers and Rue Victor Gilsoul, finally reaching Avenue de Broqueville. At this intersection lies the Gribaumont metro station, another testament to Louis Gribaumont’s lasting impact. Interestingly, while Woluwe-Saint-Pierre allowed businesses on the initial section of the avenue, Woluwe-Saint-Lambert kept its portion strictly residential. So, as you stroll along Avenue Louis Gribaumont, remember the man whose name it bears. His generosity shaped not only the street itself, but also the vibrant neighborhoods that surround it.
