Before us lies Avenue Henri Schoofs a short but significant street in Auderghem. It’s a quiet avenue today but imagine its transformation.

Avenue Henri Schoofs wasn’t always called that. Originally Rue d’Ixelles it became part of Auderghem in 1890. Long before that in 1771 the de Ferraris map shows it as a small part of a path. This path wound through the woods of Mesdael and Solbosch.

Fast forward to 1843. The Atlas des Communications lists this section as number 23. It was known as Terkammerendreef or Cambre Drive. Then came a major change in 1913. The new Chasse Royale brewery district needed roads. Avenue Henri Schoofs was revamped. This construction project reshaped the area. It paved the way for modern Auderghem.

Finally the avenue received its current name. It honors Henri Schoofs a former Auderghem alderman. Even before 1913 building permits existed. Number 7 was approved before 1913 though it wasn’t built until 1908. This shows development started early along Avenue Henri Schoofs.

Today Avenue Henri Schoofs connects Chaussée de Wavre to Boulevard du Triomphe. It measures only 90 meters long. However its small length belies a rich history. It reflects the growth of Auderghem from a wooded area to a bustling part of Brussels. The avenue’s transformation speaks to the wider changes in Brussels. This quiet street quietly embodies the history of the city’s expansion. It is a small piece of a much larger story. It’s a story about growth change and the people who shaped Auderghem. Take a moment to appreciate this little avenue. Let its history sink in. Avenue Henri Schoofs is a tiny window into a significant past. It is a testament to the rich history of this dynamic city.
