Slipping through time, imagine yourself back in 1966. The air crackles with anticipation. The decision has just been made. Lille’s literary campus will find its home on Avenue du Pont de Bois in Villeneuve-d’Ascq. Avenue du Pont de Bois, once a quiet area, was about to transform. Fast forward to 1971. Construction booms. The vision takes shape. Then, in 1974, a momentous relocation. The Faculty of Arts and Humanities bids farewell to Lille and embraces its new, avant-garde home on Avenue du Pont de Bois. Architects Pierre Vago and André Lys have designed the campus. The buildings stand as testaments to their vision. But Avenue du Pont de Bois is more than just a campus. It’s a community. By the end of 1974, construction of 1077 housing units begins. The area buzzes with activity. Imagine families settling in, children playing, life unfolding against the backdrop of academia. By June 1977, the final homes are delivered, marking a significant milestone. That same year, École Bossuet opens its doors. Soon after, in November 1977, Lycée Raymond Queneau welcomes its first students. The neighborhood takes on a vibrant energy. The vision of a thriving hub of learning and living is realized. The final construction wraps up in 1978, with the finishing touches added by 1980. Avenue du Pont de Bois had truly come into its own. Yet, even amidst completion, the spirit of growth persisted. Between 1994 and 1996, the university expanded, further solidifying Avenue du Pont de Bois as a center for knowledge and growth. This included taking over a building previously occupied by the Faculty of Law. More recently, in 2014, Collège Léon-Blum was demolished and replaced by the modern Collège Simone-de-Beauvoir. Avenue du Pont de Bois, a place woven into the fabric of Villeneuve-d’Ascq, bears witness to Lille’s educational ambition and community spirit. It’s a place where history and the future converge.
