What’s in a name? In Avenel, New Jersey, a name holds a story. Avenel, nestled within Woodbridge Township, wasn’t always called Avenel. It was once known as Demarest on the Hill, after Captain Demarest, one of the area’s founders. But in 1901, the village was renamed Avenel, in honor of Captain Demarest’s daughter. Imagine the close-knit community of early Avenel, with families like the Browns, Clarks, Coopers, Crowells, Douglasses, Edgars, and Thorpes, laying down roots alongside the Demarests. Avenel in the early 20th century was a world away from the bustling metropolis of nearby New York City, a mere 25 miles northeast along the North Jersey Coast Line. Today, Avenel retains a distinct identity while being part of the larger tapestry of Woodbridge Township. This township, by the way, is the oldest original township in New Jersey, established way back in 1664. Fast forward to the 21st century, and Avenel is still making history. In 2013, the Avenel Fire Company #1 marked a century of service with a grand celebration. That same year, Amazon opened a massive fulfillment center here, a sign of Avenel’s continuing evolution. For sports enthusiasts, Avenel is home to the Avenel Warriors. Culture vultures can explore the Avenel Performing Arts Center, which opened its doors in 2019, complete with a professional recording studio. This vibrant community offers something for everyone. Avenel, New Jersey: a place where history whispers from every corner, and the future unfolds with every passing day.
