Breathtaking panoramic view. That’s what awaits you at the Autry Overlook.

The Autry Overlook is a main destination. This makes the journey worthwhile. It is located approximately 0.6 kilometers from the start of the hiking route.

Locals and tourists ponder life at this spot. You absolutely cannot beat that view. It feels so otherworldly up here.

The Autry Museum acknowledges the Gabrielino Tongva peoples. They are the traditional land caretakers of Tovaangar. Tovaangar is the Los Angeles basin. It also includes the Southern Channel Islands. The Autry Museum and its campuses are located on their lands. We pay our respects to the Honuukvetam, Ahiihirom and Eyoohiinkem. These are ancestors, elders and relatives. This includes past, present and emerging generations.

The Autry Museum of the American West presents Reclaiming El Camino. It explores Native resistance in the Missions and Beyond. The Norman F. Sprague, Jr. Gallery holds the exhibition. It opened on December 9, 2023. It runs through June 15, 2025.

Reclaiming El Camino collaborates with Native advisors. It also includes tribal community members and Native artists. It takes a hard look at a painful past. Educational materials often overlook Native perspectives. This happens in institutions, K-12 classrooms and museums. Reclaiming El Camino illuminates the goals and motivations. It also shows the impacts of the California Spanish Mission system from an Indigenous viewpoint. Many students and most people have never heard this story before.

This exhibit explores three significant moments in time. These moments are commemorated in 2024. They demonstrate how “El Camino” is symbolic of oppression and revolution. “El Camino” means “the road”. The exhibition spotlights the enslavement and brutality that Natives experienced. This happened in and around the missions. It also reveals the resistance that Natives put up against missionaries and colonizers. This enabled their “survivance” over the last two hundred and fifty years.

Deana Dartt is the curator of Reclaiming El Camino. She says that this narrative takes you through the impacts and attempted erasure of Native people. This happened under three colonial regimes. There were a multitude of laws and policies. Also, stereotypes and racist ideas. Today, Native people continue to exist, resist and persist.

The people most impacted by ongoing waves of disruption informed and created this telling of history. They carved out places for revitalization and reclamation. This was despite the continued trauma of the colonial legacy.

The exhibit aims to educate about the vitality and courage of the First Peoples of California. It also conveys that there is no true celebration of resilience. You can’t celebrate without the knowledge of what has been endured and survived. It is a triumph of will, courage and fortitude that Native Californians remain.

Cruise one of the world’s most famous scenic drives. Wind from the Hollywood Hills. Go across the spine of the Santa Monica Mountains. Head west toward the Pacific Ocean. This scenic curvy road has occasional bikers and runners. Be mindful of the deer.

Gorgeous day or night. Pull over on one of these overlooks. Check out the view.
