Envision a tent. That’s the essence of the Autobahnkapelle Roxel. This unique chapel sits near the Münsterland East rest stop off the A1 autobahn. It offers travelers a place for reflection.
In the mid-1960s, the idea for this chapel arose. The community of St. Pantaleon in Roxel wanted to create a modern roadside sanctuary. The Münsterland region was known for its many roadside shrines and crosses. The Autobahnkapelle Roxel would continue this tradition.
A local farmer donated the land. Donations covered the construction costs. Hubert Teschlade, an architect, designed the chapel. Construction began in the summer of 1968. By June 1969, the Autobahnkapelle Roxel was consecrated. Bishop Heinrich Baaken dedicated it.
St. Pantaleon parish cares for the Autobahnkapelle Roxel. The parish uses it for May devotions and processions. The Kolpingsfamilie Roxel and volunteers maintain the chapel.
The Autobahnkapelle Roxel’s design is striking. It resembles a tent. This design symbolizes the journey of travelers. A large glass double door forms the entrance on the south side. Metal walls with colorful glass flank the door. A red and green cross sits above the entrance.
Inside the Autobahnkapelle Roxel, simplicity reigns. Concrete forms the side walls. A glass facade makes up the back wall. This provides a view of a large crucifix and the woods beyond. Teschlade designed the crucifix. The interior includes an altar, benches for kneeling and sitting. A glass case displays a figure of Saint Christopher carrying the Christ Child. Wood panels cover the interior roof.
The Autobahnkapelle Roxel provides solace. It stands at the edge of the rest stop near a small forest. The path leading to the chapel invites contemplation. It leads through an avenue directly to the entrance.
Two notable art pieces enhance the chapel. A private citizen donated the Christopherus figure. The striking outdoor crucifix is another highlight. Hubert Teschlade designed it along with the chapel. Its size and expressive depiction of Christ immediately capture attention.
The Autobahnkapelle Roxel is easily accessible. It has parking for cars, buses, and trucks. Pedestrians and cyclists can reach it from Roxel via the access road. The chapel is wheelchair accessible, thanks to level paths and entrances.
During school holidays in North Rhine-Westphalia, the Autobahnkapelle Roxel offers a special service. Representatives from local churches are available on Saturdays. From 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM, travelers can seek conversation, prayer, or blessings.
The Autobahnkapelle Roxel also hosts ecumenical services. For example, a service was held on June 30, 2024, to celebrate the nationwide day of Autobahn churches. It stands as a testament to faith.
