The Aulas, you see, represents the earliest formal beginnings of what would eventually become the esteemed University of Porto. Established as the Aula de Náutica in 1762, it marked the first institution of higher learning in this city. Imagine, back then, a small class of just twelve sea lieutenants and eighteen navy guards, their studies vital for the protection of trade routes. It’s a far cry from the bustling academic hub we know today!
Over time, the thirst for knowledge grew. The Aula de Náutica was joined by the Aula de Debuxo e Desenho, dedicated to the arts. Then, in a momentous decision that changed the face of Porto forever, those institutions were merged to form the Academia Real de Marinha e Comércio da Cidade do Porto. With it came a wider breadth of subjects, languages, and ultimately, opportunity.
