Seven pioneers. Six women and one man. They gathered in a small German Methodist Church chapel. This was September 20 1878. They organized the Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Church in Denver. This humble beginning marked the birth of Augustana Lutheran Church.
Augustana Lutheran Church Denver. It wasn’t just a church. It was a beacon for Swedish immigrants. A place of worship and community. It offered comfort and connection in a new land. Its first services were in Swedish. This reflected the strong cultural ties of its early members.
The congregation quickly grew. Denver itself was growing rapidly. In 1880 they built their first church building. This was at 18th and Welton Streets. The original building was later sold. A new building was constructed at 23rd and Court Place. This intersection no longer exists today. But Augustana’s legacy endures.
The church wasn’t simply a place of prayer. It became a hub of social activity. Augustana Lutheran Home is one example. Radio KOA Denver another. A day care center and senior citizens complex also thrived under the church’s umbrella. These initiatives show Augustana’s commitment to its community. This extended beyond spiritual guidance.
Augustana’s name is significant. It’s Latin for Augsburg Confession. This highlights the church’s strong adherence to Lutheran doctrine. It also underlines the importance of tradition. This was especially important for immigrants preserving their faith.
Even though services switched to English in the early 1920s Swedish services continued until 1953. This demonstrates the lasting cultural impact of the church’s founders. It also highlights the church’s evolution and adaptation.
When the Augustana Synod joined the LCA in 1962 Augustana Lutheran Church in Denver contributed significantly. It brought over 2300 baptized Christians into the new church. This demonstrates the impressive growth of the church. It also reflects its enduring significance in the Denver community. Augustana’s story is more than just lutfisk. It’s a tale of faith community and adaptability. It’s a story woven into the fabric of Denver. It’s a story waiting to be explored. And here you are. Right in front of it.
