“Here lies a life of service.” That’s the thought that comes to mind as we stand before the final resting place of August Holweg. This grave marks more than just an end. It signifies a life dedicated to the people of Hanover.

August Holweg was born on October 21 1905 in Linden. He died on May 21 1989 in Hanover. His journey is a testament to resilience and commitment.

Holweg trained as a turner. He worked in this profession until 1946. Early on, he developed a keen interest in politics.

In 1920, Holweg became a member of the Socialist Workers Youth. By 1924, he had joined the SPD. From that same year, he was a member of the German Metal Workers Association. This lasted until its dissolution on May 2 1933. The National Socialist government ended the association. Between 1924 and 1933, Holweg served as a union representative in large Hanoverian companies. He was also a member of various works councils.

After 1933, August Holweg joined a political resistance group. His stance against the National Socialist regime led the British military government to appoint him to the Hanover City Council after the capitulation of the German Reich on May 8 1945. At that time, he was a member of the works council at the Hanoverian metal company Hanomag. In the first free elections for the Hanover City Council in 1946, he was re-elected as a council member. From 1946 to 1952, Holweg worked full-time as a party secretary for the SPD. From 1952, he was a representative of a printing company. Simultaneously, he chaired the SPD faction in the Hanover City Council from 1949 to 1955. From 1953 to 1955, he was also the deputy of the honorary mayor.

August Holweg served as the Mayor of Hanover from 1956 to 1972. His tenure saw significant developments in the city. He significantly contributed to the expansion of the Herrenhausen Gardens. He was also involved in the founding of the Hanover Medical School in 1961. The construction of the Hanover Stadtbahn in 1965, and the construction of the Historical Museum at Hohes Ufer in 1966 also happened under his reign. During his time in office, several dozen schools were built. Numerous gymnasiums, swimming pools, day-care centers, and retirement homes were also constructed. Social housing construction was promoted. The expansion of the tangent highways, elevated roads, and the expansion of the zoo also fall within his term of office.

August Holweg rests in an honorary grave in the Ricklingen city cemetery. On January 26 1972, the Hanover City Council awarded him honorary citizenship.

Given his resistance to National Socialism, he is one of the 46 people in Hanover. Their biographies are presented as examples in the ZeitZentrum Zivilcourage. This is an extracurricular learning center that opened in 2021 in the city of Hanover.

August Holweg’s life exemplifies dedication. He dedicated himself to Hanover and its people. This final resting place serves as a reminder of his enduring impact. His legacy lives on in the city he helped shape. It lives on in the institutions he championed.
