August-Bebel-Schule

In 1960, a seed of an idea was planted. This seed would eventually blossom into the August-Bebel-Schule. The Kreisberufsschule was bursting at the seams. The district of Offenbach was paying hefty fees to the city for their students to attend the city’s vocational school. A solution was needed. So began the discussions, a flurry of meetings between the city and district of Offenbach, the Chamber of Industry and Commerce, and the Entrepreneur’s Association of the Leather Goods Industry. The August-Bebel-Schule was born from these talks, a beacon of vocational education. Construction began in 1965 on a 17,000 square meter plot in the Lauterborn area. The design, a blend of traditional and prefabricated elements, was overseen by architect Alex Weber. The classrooms and administrative wing were built in the conventional style, while the workshops and auditorium embraced the modernity of prefabricated construction. On October 30, 1967, the doors of the August-Bebel-Schule swung open, welcoming its first students. They came to learn trades like electrical work, leatherworking, construction, and chemistry. The school quickly expanded, adding full-time programs in metal and electrical engineering, leather processing, and a technical school for leather technology in 1968. It continued to grow in the 70s and 80s, incorporating a branch in Hanau-Steinheim for printing technology, and expanding its Offenbach campus with new workshops for carpentry, painting, and plumbing. The August-Bebel-Schule wasn’t just about trades. It broadened its horizons to include design, data processing, and even a pioneering program in Gestaltungs- und Medientechnik (Design and Media Technology) within its Berufliches Gymnasium (vocational high school) in 2001. This program, the first of its kind in Hesse, drew inspiration from similar programs in Baden-Württemberg. The August-Bebel-Schule essentially wrote the curriculum for this new field. The school also embraced innovation in its operations, becoming one of the first vocational schools in Hesse to participate in the “Selbstverantwortung plus” (Self-Responsibility Plus) project, a precursor to the independent vocational school model. Today, the August-Bebel-Schule stands as a testament to its namesake, August Bebel. It is a dynamic institution, constantly evolving to meet the needs of a changing world. It is a place where students learn not just skills, but also the value of self-reliance and innovation.
