The Augsburg Western Woods Nature Park isn’t just a pretty place. It’s a historical treasure. Founded in 1988 it stretches across 1175 square kilometers. That’s a vast area.
Imagine the rivers shaping this landscape. The Danube Wertach Schmutter Flossach and Mindel flow through this land. They carved the gentle hills and valleys you see. The park is mainly in the Augsburg district. It also extends into Unterallgau Gunzburg and Dillingen districts.
The landscape itself is unique. Rolling hills divide into plateaus and flat areas. It’s part of the Tertiary Hills between the Danube and the Bavarian Alpine Foreland. It shows the relationship between nature and the people of the park. Next to it stands a Staudenhaus a traditional farmhouse. It was rebuilt between 1974 and 1980.
Then there’s the Swabian Folklore and Crafts Museum. It’s in the old stables of the Staudenhaus. The Bezirk Schwaben established it in 1984. The park also has other amazing places. You’ll find a people’s observatory in Streitheim. There are medieval castles. The Fuggercastle Kirchheim is a stunner. It has the Cedarhall one of Europe’s most beautiful Renaissance halls.
The park has many pilgrimage churches too. St Michael in Violau is one. Maria Vesperbild near Ziemetshausen is another. These churches and the park itself offer a glimpse into the rich history and culture of this region. Consider the hiking and cycling trails.
