“Atze?” a child’s voice echoes. What exactly does that mean? In Berlin slang “Atze” means big brother or best friend. That’s exactly what the Atze Musiktheater aims to be.

Welcome to the Atze Musiktheater. It is not just a theatre. It is an experience for the whole family. For almost 40 years, Atze Musiktheater has been captivating audiences. It offers a unique blend of live music and theatre.

Atze Musiktheater is one of Germany’s largest family theatres. Around 100000 spectators visit each year. Here at Atze, there are three stages. These stages host a diverse repertoire for children aged three and up. School children and families also come. Mornings are often dedicated to school groups. Afternoons and weekends feature varied family programs. There is even an evening program now. It is for those who want to stay up a little later.

Atze Musiktheater’s program includes classics such as “Emil and the Detectives.” You can also see “Ronja the Robber’s Daughter” and “Das SAMS.” They also present newly told fairy tales. Examples are “Hans im Glück” and “Das tapfere Schneiderlein.” Dance theatre productions include “I am Vincent and I am not afraid”. Also see “The Ugly Duckling”.

But Atze is more than just entertainment. The Atze Musiktheater tackles important issues. Plays like “No Planet B” address the climate crisis. “The Conference of the Animals” explores socio-political themes. “You don’t talk about that” encourages children to discuss sexuality. It also teaches them about setting boundaries.

Atze Musiktheater strives to strengthen children’s self-esteem. They support personal development. They encourage children to recognize and demand their rights. Music is central to Atze’s identity. All productions feature live music. Atze also offers educational theatre programs. They have current interactive political formats for young people.

Each year, Atze hosts a Junior Barcamp. About 100 students discuss their ideas for the future. They even get to share these ideas with politicians.

Since 2023, Atze Musiktheater has expanded. They now have a new open-air stage. It is called the Tempelhofer Feld air castle. Here, you can enjoy spoken theatre, concerts, and comedy during the summer.

Founded in 1985 as a band project. Since the mid-90s, the Atze Musiktheater has become a unique institution. It is known throughout Germany. The Great Theatre Hall seats 480 visitors. The Studio Stage accommodates another 150. The tent stage is specially designed for the youngest viewers. It offers space for 60.

So, whether you’re a child or a child at heart, Atze Musiktheater welcomes you. Prepare to be enchanted by the magic of music and theatre.
