Can you imagine a monastery built entirely of teak, adorned with intricate carvings and gleaming stucco? This is Atumashi Kyaung, a magnificent monastery in Mandalay. Built in 1857 by King Mindon, this temple was a testament to his devotion. The monastery’s structure was unlike any other, a grand creation that rose upon five graduated rectangular terraces, instead of the traditional tiered Burmese roofs. Imagine a spectacular stairway leading to the ornate entrance, adorned with golden decorations. However, tragedy struck in 1890. A fire devastated the city, destroying the monastery and its immense Buddha statue. This fire, though, wasn’t the end of Atumashi Kyaung. You are looking at its magnificent reconstruction, completed in 1996. While the original structure was made of teak, the new Atumashi Kyaung is built with concrete. It’s still a beautiful temple, though. The Atumashi you see today is a testament to the perseverance and cultural heritage of the Burmese people.
