Organized in 1872 in Benton City by eleven Master Masons, Atascosa Lodge No. 379 received its charter in 1873 from the Grand Lodge of Texas. They built their first hall in 1876. Interestingly, this hall, built of stone, also housed the public school. Imagine children learning their ABCs within the same walls that hosted Masonic meetings. The lodge played a vital role in the social and cultural development of the area. In 1909, the lodge moved to Lytle. This plaque, erected in 1970, is a testament to the lodge’s enduring legacy.
