Whispers of faith echo through time. This is the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Russian Orthodox Church. Right here on Livernois Street in Ferndale Michigan stands a beacon of devotion. It’s a place where generations have sought solace and spiritual guidance.

For over a century this church has been a cornerstone of the community. Its history is deeply intertwined with the lives of countless individuals. Their stories are woven into the very fabric of this hallowed space. Many of the early members were German immigrants. They arrived in the 1830s during a devastating cholera epidemic. Seeking refuge they settled nearby. They joined a small group of French Catholic families. These were the descendants of the earliest pioneers and trappers. The Greiner family is particularly important to the church’s origins. Their name appears in the cemetery. Greiner Street itself intersects with Gratiot Avenue near the church.

John and Catherine Greiner played a pivotal role in the church’s founding. In the 1830s they donated land. This was for a log cabin chapel. This humble structure was the forerunner to the magnificent church we see today. It was originally called Kirchen Wald Church in the Woods. Redemptionist missionaries provided services there. Later it became known as the Chapel of the Assumption and then St Marys in the Woods. Finally it settled on the name Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church.

In 1847 the church became only the second parish in what is now Detroit. Family genealogies often note births marriages and deaths at Assumption Greinerville. Father Amandus Van Den Driessche from Belgium served as the first full time pastor. He arrived in 1852. He oversaw the construction of a permanent brick structure. This was completed in 1852 and seated 500 people.

Inspired by the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes in France Father Van Den Driessche commissioned a replica. This stunning grotto designed by Peter Dederichs was completed in 1881. In 1882 Pope Leo XIII granted indulgences to those who visited and prayed there.

The church burned down. A third church was built in 1907. However the growing population soon outgrew this. The current church designed by architect Aloys Frank Herman was built between 1928 and 1929. It was dedicated on September 22 1929. Its Neo-Gothic style and limestone facade are truly awe inspiring. Inside Italian marble altars and stained glass windows depict scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary and the saints.
