Doesn’t the Assumption Grotto Catholic Church stand as a testament to faith and community? It is located on Gratiot Avenue in Detroit. This church is formally known as the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church. However, it is commonly called Assumption Grotto Church. Its history stretches back to the 1830s. German immigrants seeking refuge from a cholera epidemic established a small settlement. They built a log church and called it Kirchen Wald. Later, the name evolved to Chapel of the Assumption and then to St. Mary’s in the Woods. Finally, it was designated the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church.

In 1847, the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church became a parish. It was only the second in the Detroit area. Father Amandus Van Den Driessche, the first full-time pastor, arrived in 1852. He initiated the construction of a permanent brick church, completed by the end of that year.

Father Vandendriessche visited France in 1876. He was deeply inspired by the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes. He commissioned a replica of the grotto to be built at the Assumption Grotto Catholic Church. Peter Dederichs designed the grotto, which was completed in 1881. Farmers from across Michigan helped build the Grotto. They hauled stones to the site. On April 30, 1882, Pope Leo XIII granted indulgences for those who visited the Grotto. He also granted them for those who prayed for the propagation of the faith.

As Detroit expanded in the early 20th century, the parish grew too. After the 1852 church burned down, a third church began construction in 1907. But the population continued to increase. Aloys Frank Herman designed the current church to accommodate the larger congregation. The new Assumption Grotto Catholic Church was built from 1928 to 1929. The dedication took place on September 22, 1929.

The Assumption Grotto Catholic Church complex includes several structures. These are the church, a convent, a rectory, and a cemetery. Of course there is the grotto. The shrine is made from imported limestone. Boulders from Michigan farms surround it.

The Assumption Grotto Catholic Church stands as a beacon of faith. It also stands as a testament to Detroit’s rich history. It is a place where tradition and community intertwine. It is a place where the faithful gather. The elaborate wooden ceiling evokes the hull of Noah’s ark. The front façade depicts 3 windows and 3 entrances. They are symbolic of the Triune God-Head. The intricate details and the serene atmosphere offer a glimpse into the past. The church provides a sanctuary for the present.
