Founded in 1948 by the Somascan Fathers, Assumption Catholic Church has been a cornerstone of the Houston community for generations. Located near the intersection of Airline Drive and East Little York Road, close to I-45 North, Assumption Catholic Church has witnessed the city grow and change around it. The church serves a large and vibrant community of over 4,150 families. Assumption Catholic Church is known for its annual living Stations of the Cross held on Good Friday. This moving event draws people from all walks of life. In the summer of 2019, Assumption Catholic Church underwent extensive renovations. Parishioners held services in the parish gym while the church building received a much-needed refresh. The renovations included new, comfortable kneelers, a new sacristy ceiling, and a new safety guard on the second floor. Wider stairs now lead to the overflow room, and new doors open to the interior rooms. The church also boasts modern confessionals, an updated sound system, four TV monitors, and energy-efficient LED lighting. A fresh coat of paint brightens the entire space, highlighting the colorful stained glass windows. A magnificent floor-to-ceiling painting of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a focal point of the renovated sanctuary. Archbishop Emeritus Joseph A. Fiorenza celebrated the first Mass in the renewed space on August 17, 2019. This Mass of Blessing of the Re-Inauguration of the Church marked a new chapter in the life of Assumption Catholic Church. The renovations provide a more welcoming and inspiring environment for worship and prayer. Even the parish gymnasium received upgrades, including a new HVAC unit, improving comfort for parochial and school events.
