Stepping inside the Assahaba Moschee offers a surprising contrast to the bustling Fuhlsbüttler Straße outside. The Assahaba Moschee, once a bank, retains a solid, weighty door in its lower level, a testament to its previous life. The building itself exudes a sense of calm, a warm and welcoming atmosphere permeating every corner. The main prayer hall, situated on the ground floor, is a spacious area for men, complemented by a smaller, dedicated space for women. Also on this floor is a large classroom, buzzing with activity on Sundays as young people gather to learn about Islam and the Arabic language. A small kitchen and a refrigerator stocked with drinks offer refreshments to guests, especially children, based on a simple trust system. A donation box sits open, inviting contributions while allowing everyone to take what they need. Downstairs, a room transformed into a men’s salon provides a dedicated space for grooming and socializing. Another classroom on this level hosts a more intimate learning environment. I witnessed a group of about twelve children, diligently practicing the proper way to perform their prayers. During my visit, guided by the Imam, I observed the regular Sunday activities of the Assahaba Moschee. Children accompanied by their mothers filled the classrooms for Islamic studies, while men gathered for midday prayers. The atmosphere felt personal and welcoming. It’s clear that the Assahaba Moschee is more than just a place of worship. It’s a community hub, a center for learning, and a quiet sanctuary amidst the vibrant energy of Hamburg.
