Ever wondered how a church could be born from two? Aspley Uniting Church stands here today because of such a unique beginning. It represents a fresh start for the congregations of St Philip’s and Robinson Road churches.

Let’s step back to understand its origins. The Uniting Church in Australia formed in 1977. This union brought together various Protestant denominations. Aspley Uniting Church emerged from Methodist and Presbyterian roots.

The foundation stone of this worship center was laid on October 14 1984. Rev Prof R A Busch, President of the Uniting Church in Australia, officiated. The stone signifies a new beginning. It honors the former congregations of St Philip’s and Robinson Road churches. Ministers Rev Harold T Seaton and Rev Stanley G Schloss also played crucial roles. Construction finished and the church opened on November 24 1985.

Interestingly the foundation stone lacks a “To the glory of God” reference. However a foundation stone on the hall includes it. It reads “Aspley Methodist Hall – To the glory of God – Laid 21st September 1958”. Rev S G Monro, President of Conference, laid that stone.

The church also has a plaque on the fence. It commemorates the 25th Anniversary of The Uniting Church in Australia. The anniversary was on June 22 2002. A ‘Gift of Grace’ rose was planted by Mary Taylor to mark the occasion.

Aspley Uniting Church is more than just a place of worship. It’s also a hub for community activities. Uca-Aspley offers a wide range of adult education classes. These classes cater to people over 50 years of age.

The courses include Greeting Cards and Piano Club. You can also find Water-Colour Painting and Computing classes. Language classes are also popular. They include French German Italian Russian and Spanish. Other activities range from Reading Group to Indoor Bowls. Line-Dancing Mah Jong Crocheting and Knitting are offered too. Some classes are even held at the Anglican Church on Ridley Road.

The church is accessible to everyone. It has wheelchair access disabled toilets and parking. A contribution fee applies for the classes. Volunteers are welcome to assist with classes and setting up. New class suggestions are always appreciated.

So Aspley Uniting Church is a place of faith learning and community. It embodies the spirit of unity and service. Its history reflects a blend of traditions and a commitment to the present.
