Asokwa Municipal District is located in the Ashanti Region. It lies in the central part of the region. Asokwa serves as its capital town. The district covers a total area of 25.31 square kilometers.

In 2021 the population was 125642. This makes Asokwa a vibrant community. It is full of life and potential.

The Asokwa Municipal District plays a vital role in Ghana’s governance. It is one of forty-three districts in the Ashanti Region. It is also one of the 261 MMDAs in Ghana. MMDAs are Metropolitan Municipal and District Assemblies.

The Asokwa Municipal Assembly was created with LI 2294. It was carved out of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly. Asokwa was inaugurated on March 15 2018. This happened alongside thirty-seven other newly created districts.

Honorable Patricia Appeagyei has held significant office. She served as Deputy Minister for Ministry of Environment Science Technology and Innovation. She assumed office in January 2013 and March 2017. She served under President Nana Akufo-Addo. She is a member of the New Patriotic Party.

Asokwa is also a constituency. It is represented in the Parliament of Ghana. It elects one Member of Parliament. This is done by the first past the post system. The constituency was created in 2004. The Electoral Commission of Ghana created it. This was along with twenty-nine other new constituencies. This increased the number of constituencies. It went from 200 to 230.

The Asokwa Interchange stands as a symbol of progress. It was jointly financed. The Agence Francaise de Development of France helped. The Government of Ghana also contributed.

The project cost an estimated GH¢27.5 million. It involved construction of a two-lane carriageway. This was at the Oforikrom-Asokwa by-pass. It improved the road network on the Lake Road.

The interchange increases capacity at intersections. It improves traffic operations. It increases pavement strength. It enhances the safety of pedestrians and other road users. It is the missing link. It completes the seventeen-kilometer inner ring road network in Kumasi.

The Baba Yara Sports Stadium calls Asokwa Municipal District home. It is also known as Kumasi Sports Stadium. It is a multi-purpose stadium. It is Ghana’s largest stadium. It has a seating capacity of 40528.

The Kumasi Stadium hosts football matches. It is also used for athletics. It is home to Asante Kotoko. It is also home to King Faisal. These are popular sports clubs.

The stadium was originally built in 1957. The United African Company built it. It was inaugurated as a football pitch in 1959. Stands were first constructed in 1971. The stadium was rebuilt in 1977. It was renamed after Baba Yara in 2004.

The stadium hosted the African Cup of Nations in 1978 2000 and 2008. It hosted six group matches in 1978. It also hosted one of the semi-final matches. During the 2000 African Cup of Nations the stadium hosted seven matches.

The Kumasi City Mall enriches the district’s economy. It is located in Asokwa. It is the first of its kind in the city. The Kumasi City Mall cost $95 million. It took twenty-four months to complete. The mall provides a convenient shopping destination. It serves the entire city.

The tenant mix caters to a broad market. The mall is one of the biggest in West Africa. Delico Kumasi Limited owns the property.
