Picture the Askania Höfe. Imagine these elegant buildings in Berlin-Friedenau. They stand as silent witnesses to a rich history. A history intertwined with precision instruments and wartime secrets.

The Askania Höfe weren’t always known by that name. Originally built between 1919 and 1936. They were constructed by Carl Bamberg’s Optische Geräte company. Carl Bamberg a skilled mechanic and optician achieved fame for his precision instruments. He established a workshop in Berlin-Friedenau in 1871. He even became a purveyor to the royal court. His creations were used in naval navigation and astronomical research.

During World War I Bamberg’s company flourished. In 1921 it merged to become Askania-Werke AG. The Askania name and logo survived even the devastation of World War II. This is a testament to the lasting impact of Bamberg’s legacy. The Askania Höfe thrived as a center for precision engineering. Their products played a crucial role in both scientific advancements and wartime efforts.

Smart-aleck knowledge: Did you know that Askania instruments weren’t just for science? They were instrumental in the development of guidance systems for the V1 and V2 rockets. The Askania Höfe’s production contributed significantly to the German war machine. A dark chapter in their illustrious history. This is a stark reminder of the complex nature of technological advancement during wartime.

After the war the Askania-Werke were broken up. The Askania name though remained. Even today Askania is recognized as a premium watch brand. This is a direct continuation of the legacy of the former company.

The Askania Höfe fell into decline after the war. But thankfully these significant buildings were saved. Becker & Kries took over and painstakingly restored the Askania Höfe. These buildings are now a protected industrial monument. They represent an important part of Berlin’s industrial heritage.
