Forgotten for centuries, Ashtown Castle stands here in Phoenix Park. It whispers tales of hidden rooms and secret lives. This restored medieval tower house is Dublin’s best-kept secret. It is the oldest building in the park.

Ashtown Castle wasn’t always visible. Imagine a grand Georgian lodge enveloping this very spot. This lodge, built in the 18th century, concealed the castle within its walls. It served as the official residence for the Under Secretary of Ireland. Think of it as a regional governor’s luxurious hideaway.

Then, in 1978, the lodge was set for demolition. Workers made an astonishing discovery. Ashtown Castle, a relic of the 17th century, maybe even the 15th century, emerged from the rubble. Historic preservationists halted the demolition. The castle was saved.

Today, only Ashtown Castle remains, a proud testament to a forgotten past. The adjacent structure now serves as a visitor center. You can explore beautiful walled Victorian gardens.

But why was Ashtown Castle built? The 17th century was a turbulent time. The government offered money to those who built castles for defense. John Connell, or ‘John of Ashtown’, owned this estate in 1641. His land spanned 200 acres, a mix of fields, woodland, an orchard, and thatched cottages. Ashtown Castle was likely his fortified home.

Later, in 1668, Marcus Trevor, Viscount Dungannon, resided here with two keepers. The Lord Lieutenant of Ireland acquired Ashtown Castle for the King. The King wanted to expand his deer park.

Around 1774, Ashtown Lodge was built incorporating the castle. It became the official residence of the Under Secretary in 1782. Legend speaks of secret tunnels. These tunnels supposedly ran from the lodge to other important buildings. People could travel unseen and safely.

Even the Papal Nuncio called Ashtown Lodge home until 1978. Then the castle’s secret was revealed.

Ashtown Castle has seen its share of fame. Its grounds have served as a backdrop for famous artists. Coldplay, Robbie Williams, and U2 have all graced this location. Ashtown is not just history, it is also a star.

Restoration work in 1989 revealed fascinating details. The castle underwent alterations in the 18th and 19th centuries. Georgian windows and new flooring were added. Parts of the roof were reworked.

The castle’s dimensions conformed to government standards. It needed to be defensible. It is a rare example of a fortified tower house so close to Dublin.

Now, you can explore Ashtown Castle. Entry is free. You can visit from Wednesday to Sunday from November to March. The hours are 9:30 am to 5:30 pm. From April to October, it is open daily from 10:00 am to 5:45 pm.

As you wander through its four stories, imagine the lives that unfolded within these walls. Think about John Connell defending his land. Envision the Under Secretary receiving important guests. Picture the Papal Nuncio in quiet contemplation. Ashtown Castle is more than just a building. It is a portal to the past.
