Ashton House stands proudly on Newnham Road. It’s a charming building a true Cambridge landmark. Despite its size it’s easily spotted.

For many years Ashton House lay empty. It neared dilapidation. Then Corpus Christi College stepped in. Caroe Architecture Ltd undertook a significant renovation. The project transformed the house. It’s now student accommodation.

The building’s history stretches back far beyond its 19th-century construction. A document from 1750 refers to ‘Ashton House Farm’. This is the earliest known reference to a building with that name. However Corpus Christi College’s connection to the site goes back much further. A will from 1525 bequeathed the land to the College.

The renovation was carefully planned. It preserved the building’s character. The work included repairing the building fabric. The distinctive road frontage was improved. Historic features like fire surrounds and register plates were saved.

Inside the house the layout was reorganized. It now houses multiple students. Thermal upgrades improved energy efficiency. This included new walls floors and roof construction using woodfibre. A new clay tile roof was added. A ventilation system and underfloor heating were also installed.

The rear of Ashton House was less coherent. It included a 1950s extension. A contemporary timber-clad porch was added. This serves as a modern entrance for students. Covered cycle parking is also a feature. It’s a necessity for student accommodation.

The project’s success is visible. Ashton House stands as a testament to thoughtful restoration. It combines historic charm with modern comforts. It’s a wonderful example of sensitive adaptation of a historic building. The students of Corpus Christi College now enjoy a unique home in a beautifully preserved building. The legacy of Ashton House continues.
