Envision this elegant white stuccoed brick building. This is Ashley Hall Manor in Charleston. Built between 1802 and 1816 it was once home to wealthy merchants. Patrick Duncan a successful candle maker originally built it. He purchased the land in 1798 from Daniel Cannon. The neighborhood Cannonborough is named after him.

Ashley Hall Manor has a rich history. It changed hands several times. James Nicholson owned it from 1829 to 1838. James R Pringle bought it next. He was Charleston’s mayor from 1830 to 1831. He also served in the South Carolina legislature. George Trenholm a merchant and later the Confederate Treasury Secretary owned it later.

In 1909 Dr Mary Vardrine McBee transformed Ashley Hall Manor. She founded Ashley Hall a girls’ preparatory school. It’s still a school today. The school has high academic standards. It’s known for its impressive alumnae including former First Lady Barbara Bush and author Madeleine L’Engle.

The architecture of Ashley Hall Manor is striking. It’s a Classical Revival style. Notice the two stories above a high basement. Look at the portico supported by four giant Ionic columns. See the Palladian stance the balustraded pedestals. The pediment has triptych Gothic windows. The front elevation of the basement has arches. Originally open they’ve been glazed. The portico facade is a deeply convex apse with balconies and wrought iron railings.

Ashley Hall Manor’s story is one of transformation. From a merchant’s home to a prestigious girls’ school. It stands as a testament to Charleston’s history. It’s a place where generations of students have learned and grown. It continues to shape the lives of young women. It remains a significant landmark. A symbol of Charleston’s enduring spirit.
